A Academia de Artes e Ciências Interativas (AIAS, Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences) premiou durante a 12ª Premiação Anual de Realização Interativa os vencedores dos melhores games de 2008. A maior premiação do mundo do entretenimento virtual teve como destaque o título da Sony Computer Entertainment, desenvolvido pela Media Molecule, LittleBigPlanet, que recebeu 10 indicações e faturou 8 estatuetas, sendo uma delas a de melhor game do ano.
Jogos favoritos e de grande sucesso como Grand Theft Auto IV (PC, Xbox 360, PS3), Gears of War 2 (Xbox 360) e Call of Duty: World at War (PC, Xbox 360, PS3), não receberam uma estatueta se quer, ficando apenas com algumas indicações. Os poucos títulos favoritos a saírem com o devido reconhecimento foram Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, exclusivo ao PlayStation 3, que levou o prêmio de melhor trilha sonora original, e Spore (PC) que foi premiado como o título de melhor mecânica de jogo.
O estrondoso shooter de ação Left 4 Dead (PC, Xbox 360) desenvolvido pela Valve levou os prêmios de melhor título para PC e melhor mecânica multiplayer. O game da Bethesda, Fallout 3 (PC, Xbox 360, PS3), considerado por muitos como um dos grandes jogos de sua geração, saiu com as estatuetas de melhor roteiro original e melhor RPG (Role-playing Game), além de várias outras indicações. Para a AIAS, Dead Space (PC, Xbox 360, PS3), terror da EA que combina elementos de games como Silent Hill, Doom e Resident Evil, foi o melhor título de ação e o que teve o melhor design de áudio em 2008. Por fim, Mirror’s Edge (PC, Xbox 360, PS3) acabou ficando com a estatueta de melhor aventura e Braid (Xbox 360, PC) com a gratificação de melhor título casual.
Bruce Shelley, pai da franquia de estratégia em tempo real “Age of Empires” e um dos fundadores do já extinto Ensemble Studios também recebeu uma homenagem no Hall da Fama da AIAS.
